Designing Clothes

lazura:

Srsly, i’m very bad at Clothes designing and drawing, as i’m sure you all know. Can anyone offer tips, tutorials or general advice for illustrating clothes?

Honestly you seem to be able to draw folds & direction fine, judging by that last piece, but here’s a tutorial I like that might interest you:

How to Draw Cloth - Great info. on folds and length.

Having an arsenal of several different kinds of clothing might be key to design. I’m still trying to learn good design myself, but what I started to do is this:

  • Create a Clothing Reference folder on your computer.
  • Try to think of every type of item a person can wear (shirt, jacket, vest, hat, bracelet, glasses, etc.) and make each of them a category folder.
  • Within each category, shirts for example, add your drawings/photos of every type of that item you can find and think of. So in shirts you’d have an example of a regular t-shirt, v-neck, low-neck, long-sleeved shirt, wife-beater, etc. For each item you could even draw/comment about the distinct hem-lines, length, and other details.
  • Add new categories/subcategories when you discover/remember them. Looking at costumes/cosplay can help you think of new categories/items.
  • Optional:  Add categories for different eras (modern, medieval, renaissance, etc.), cultures, religions, fantasy/science fiction trends(things you see often or interesting ideas that inspire you), famous characters, etc.
  • Optional: Add a folder for fabrics and/or patterns. (I always forget these.)
  • Optional: When you’ve gathered a bunch of things in one category, you could paste them all onto one document to make referencing faster. (Or you could just add everything to one document at the beginning.)

If you always add new/unique types of apparel to the collection once you find any, you will have a lot to draw from when you’re not sure what to do.

Unfortunately I couldn’t find any tutorials on how to design outfits either. >_<

Anyhoo, that’s my advice, and since it’s coming from someone on the same artistic level, you might wanna take it with a grain of salt. xD Good luck! :D
