Why I use Paint Tool SAI
You make me want to try sai

I think you would be right at home with your style. There may not be that much to mess with in Sai, which I find to be the opposite of my experiences in PS (USE ALL THE FILTERS/BRUSHES/ADJUSTMENTS!), yet somehow I find the experience more enjoyable. It’s a little closer to painting traditionally, although not as much as Painter.

If I had any suggestions or praises for painting in Sai, I think they would be:

  • Blending, blending, blending.
  • Paint on one layer for nice interactions between objects, and blending. (You can see an immediate difference when trying to add colors on separate layer vs. applying it to the same layer as the object.)
  • Use individual layers for detailing objects, especially ones with hard or flat edges. (Accessories, details on clothing, weapons, etc.) Use clipping masks with them to do amazing things. Optional: Merge to main layer once complete for blending into bg.
  • Luminosity and Lumi & Shade are f’n amazing. (Use on separate layer.)
  • When using the watercolor tool to blend: Larger brush size = Creates incredibly soft, seamless blends; Small brush size = Good for fading details, and texturing.
  • Painting hair in SAI is soooooo easy.
  • Perfect line-art, but duh, everyone knows that, and that’s almost always why they have SAI. XD
  • The ease of use & speed of the program is great.
  • It’s hard to explain, but there’s more control over the paint’s character. I’m always fighting with PS to find the right brushes that apply the amount of pressure/opacity I need for each element. I don’t have that problem in SAI. Any miss-strokes I encounter are easily fixed.

I haven’t even tried to mess with everything yet, so there might be more amazing  things I haven’t discovered.

The only things I find myself being persistently frustrated about is not having a b&w filter, being unable to quickly make brushes for textures and effects, limited ability to edit values with filters, and not having some of the amazing tools available from PS. You can always switch back and forth between the two, however. :D

Anyhoodily, I’m sure you’ll have fun with it, even if it’s not your cup’o’tea.

P.S. Your art would be awesome either way. :3
